l have a 2002 gmc z71 extended cab truck and in the back seat the car set anchors look to be only in the middle, does my childs front facing car seat need to be placed in the middle?

Put her car seat where the anchors are. That is why they are there.

Actually, most vehicles prohibit using LATCH in the middle position, so l would be surprised if that is where they were. More likely, you're seeing the innermost two LATCH anchors from the outboard positions. Keep digging in that seat cushion, right by the doors in the back seat. THere should be 4 anchors total, 2 for rear driver, 2 for rear passenger. And u do not have to use LATCH just b/c its there, either. Seatbelts r jsut as safe as LATCH. LATCH was invented to be more universal & convenient, though it rather failed on both counts b/c of how much the anchors widths vary in different vehicles. Use whichever gives u the best installation. Same is true of where u should put the seat. Put the seat in the position that gives the best installation. If all positions install equally well, with less than 1'' of movement at the beltpath, then yes, middle is safest. But the outer positions r not unsafe if that is where it installs best.
