Go to a dealer or a reputable shop and have the mechanic check the ''Trouble Codes''. This will give him and idea of what the cars engine management system is telling the computer is wrong.

If you live near any Auto Zone parts store, they can reset it for you and tell you what the codes say is wrong. For free.

Any national auto parts store (Checker/Shucks/Kragen, AutoZone, etc.), will read the code for free, as well as reset it. Keep in mind, however, that if u do not fix the problem that caused the code to pop up in the first place, it will just come back on again. It may be a small problem, such as a loose gas cap, so the motor is not necessarily in limp mode. Disconnecting the battery will not work as all models since '96 r OBD-I l & will retain codes even if power is lost. That only works on older OBD- l setups.

Either with the use of a scanner or disconnect the battery.
