My key was getting stuck in the off position of my 2005 Saturn Ion.l took it in and they re-keyed the ignition for $250.00.When l got home, l could not get the key out of the lock.l took it back and now l am told its the shifter.For some reason the computer does not know that the car is in park.The key will eventually release after a minute or two but its a hassle but now l am out of money.Anyone know how to fix the shifter?This is an automatic by the way.

It sounds like ur mechanic improperly ''diagnosed'' the problem - more like guessed. There is a switch that tells the computer what position the gear selector is in. This is usually on the transmission where the shifter cable connects.

If you're handy with a volt meter & a schematic diagram, u can verify if the switch is faulty. Sometimes they just need to be slightly re-positioned by loosening the screws & turning it slightly & tightening it back down.

l might complain that the mechanic did not properly diagnose the problem, & that any mechanic worth his certificate would have known to verify the part is faulty before replacing parts.
