Cap was loose? or distributor loose in block?

If the cap was loose, replace the cap and rotor.

if the distributor was loose, pull it out, and check end of shaft, and gear..

Do you mean the engine wo not turn over? If so you might have jammed the distributor gear down on the cam gear and locked up the cam and that would lockup the crankshaft. Try loosing it back up and see what happens. Do not turn the distributor because it will throw the timing off. Mark a line on the distributor and engine block so you can keep it in the same position.
